The data tables contain the full set of information recorded in the census: Forenames, Surname, Relationship to head of household, Marital status, Age, Occupation, Place of birth, County/Country of Birth, as well as recording the street address, town and county where the census occurred. Searches can be conducted on individual counties, multiple counties selected by the user, countries, and the whole of the UK. Search parameters can include wild cards for fuzzy searching on one or more of forenames, surname, occupation and place of birth. Searches can include county and country of birth, and can select people from any age range between 0 and 125. Searches use AND logic only, and can be restricted to men or women, and to 1851 or all dates. Search results can be ordered by name, date, census place or place of birth. Searches can be made on the original compressed data files, or on uncompressed subsets of the data saved to disk. For example you could save a subset of all the records in Yorkshire. Searches on subsets are very much faster than new searches on the original data. Search results can be viewed in tables, graphs and on maps. Colour frequency maps can be plotted for county of birth, absolute numbers by county of census, and relative numbers by county of census (Relative to each 1000 people counted in that county.) Graphs can be drawn of results by age frequency (bar chart), by country of birth (pie chart) and by gender (pie chart). All graphs can be plotted in 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional form. Age frequency graphs are plotted in 1, 5 or 10 year bands with the option to see sex ratios and absolute numbers at any point on the graph. Search results are viewed on a scrolling grid with Find facilities on any column. Any individual in the search results can be selected in this grid and then viewed in a detailed 'as enumerated' window which shows all other residents at that address as well as their full personal details. All graphs and charts can be printed directly or saved to file as Windows bitmaps. Result sets of up to 500 individuals can be printed directly from the results grid. Single households can be printed from the 'as enumerated' window. |
This census mapping and viewing program is particularly valuable for studying surname distribution, population movements, age and sex distributions, and the makeup of people in different occupations. While the chances are that you will not find any direct ancestors, you will be able to see the typical characteristics and neighbourhoods of others with a similar profile to your ancestors. The census program is supplied on a single CD-ROM and uses the runtime versions of Graphics Server 4.0 for graph plotting and the Borland Database Engine for database access. It requires Windows 3.1 and at least 4MB RAM, but preferably more, as well as up to 40MB of free hard disk space for storing temporary files as they are decompressed from the CD-ROM. If you store uncompressed subsets of the data, you will need additional disk space for these files. |
